Deciding to quit your job is never an easy task. But when your job is taking a negative toll on your health and happiness, something needs to change.
We all need to pay the bills and put food on the table. It’s time to move on and chart a new path, whether it’s at another job or as an entrepreneur.
But exactly do you know it’s time to quit your job? Here are 10 glaring warning signs that you need an escape plan.
1. It’s taking a toll on your health
It’s normal to feel tired after a long day at work. However, if you experience a constant lack of energy month after month, that’s a sign that it may be time to pack things up. A job that drains you emotionally, mentally, and physically won’t allow you to perform at your best. So it benefits no one in the end. Burnout and stress can also lead to other chronic illnesses.
Stress can trigger physical changes in the body, too. For instance, I started losing my hair in round patches while working at my last 9 to 5. This was a result of an autoimmune disease called Alopecia Areata, which causes your immune system to attack healthy hair follicles. I was chronically fatigued, stressed, and irritable. That’s when I knew I had to leave the job as soon as possible.
2. You’re slipping into depression and anxiety
Are you struggling to get out of bed in the morning or feel like a dark cloud is hanging over you? You may feel like you’re floating through a dream and just going through the motions every day. Maybe you don’t want to spend time with family or friends anymore or pursue the hobbies you normally like to do. Those are possible signs of clinical depression, the most common mental illness. There are a variety of causes of depression, such as family history, suppressed anger, and childhood trauma. Prolonged unhappiness at a job can also lead to depression.
Depression often goes hand in hand with anxiety, a constant state of worry. Maybe you find yourself constantly worrying about meeting deadlines, dealing with your coworkers, or getting a good performance review. It’s normal to have some anxiety about doing a good job at work, but that’s not healthy when it consumes your life. No job is worth sacrificing your health. You only have one body to get you through this life.
3. You’re daydreaming and staring at the clock
You’ve been performing the same mundane task for years, and it’s boring you to tears. So you often find yourself twiddling your thumbs, checking the clock to see how close it is to lunchtime, or daydreaming about your next vacation. Boredom is another sign that you may need to look at other opportunities. You know you’re too talented to sit at a desk all day, wasting away your one precious life.
4. You just don’t care anymore
Are you doing just the bare minimum to not get fired? Maybe you find yourself strolling into the office late or going outside for some fresh air a few times a day. If that’s the case, then you definitely need to look at other employment options. If you really despise your job to the point that you just don’t give a darn, it’s only a matter of time before your boss catches on. It’s better to turn in your two-week notice before you get booted out.
5. You feel undervalued
Everyone deserves to feel appreciated for the value they provide to a company. It’s disheartening when you work your tail off and don’t get even a simple thank you. You feel like you’re busting your behind for people who couldn’t care less about you. If that’s the case, then you need to take your talents elsewhere. There’s a company out there that will appreciate your hard work and make you feel like a valued member of the team.
Maybe you’ve been working at the same place for a few years since graduating from college. You’ve rotated through a few roles and learned everything you can possibly learn about that line of work. Now, you’re just not growing anymore. It’s time to move on to new things. Find a new challenge and stretch yourself. If you’re not growing, you’re dying.
6. Your values and goals no longer align with the company
The best job is one that aligns with your own values and goals. However, those things can change as we grow and mature. You’re going to have different experiences throughout your 20s and 30s that will shape you as a person. They will shift your values and priorities, and that’s okay. Your work needs to evolve to keep up with who you are as a person at any given time. If you’re no longer committed to the same ideals that you were when you started the job, you need to move on to a new role.
7. Your boss is giving you hell
There are few situations that more stressful than dealing with an overbearing boss from hell. He criticizes everything you do. He uses fear and intimidation to keep employees in line. Or maybe he micromanages you to the point that you feel suffocated. It’s all-around unpleasant, and dealing with this can make even the most cheerful person miserable. If your boss is making your life a living hell, it may be time to quit your job and find another opportunity.
8. The culture is toxic
A little bit of office gossip is to be expected. However, when gossip, backstabbing, lying, and cheating are normal at the workplace, what we have is toxic work culture. Everyone is looking out for themselves and will step over others to get ahead. This type of environment fosters cutthroat competition instead of collaboration. It makes for a stressful and anxiety-provoking experience if you consider yourself a decent person with integrity. Should you find yourself in an organization like this, an exit plan is a must to quit your job.
9. The pay is too low
We all deserve to be compensated well based on what we bring to the table – our skills and our results. If your company is paying you less than you believe you’re worth, and they won’t budge when you ask for a raise, then it’s time to move on to new opportunities. You can’t be stuck making someone rich when you’re barely scraping by. You can either find another organization that will pay you better or start your own business. As a business owner, there’s no cap on your income and you can quit Your job.
10. It’s negatively affecting your relationships
Last but not least, if your relationships are suffering because of your job, you need to find a way out. The relationships we have with our friends and family are part of what gives life meaning. These are people who will be there for us through thick and thin. If your job makes you irritable to the point that you don’t want to spend time with your loved ones anymore, that’s a serious problem. Or maybe you find yourself lashing out at people or behaving like a different person. Maybe you’re working so much that you don’t even have the time to spend with your loved ones. You have to decide what’s more important to you: your relationships or that job.
