If you’re thinking about starting an e-commerce business, then you’ve probably heard about Amazon FBA. Selling on Amazon is one of the most popular e-commerce business models. Given that Amazon is the world’s biggest marketplace, this should come as no surprise. In this post, we’ll be hearing from a six-figure Amazon seller about how to make money selling on Amazon FBA. He’ll share his top tips and strategies to successfully start and grow an Amazon FBA business.

What is Amazon FBA?

Amazon FBA, which stands for Fulfilled by Amazon, is an online store run by Amazon and managed by a seller. Each seller has a seller account – an online store – used to find and promote products. When someone orders the product, Amazon takes care of fulfillment.

I recently had a chance to interview Vik JC, a six-figure Amazon seller and founder of FBAstars.com, to learn about the secrets to his success. Based near London, Vik grew his Amazon FBA into a six-figure business in just two years. In this post, he will talk about what it takes to be successful as with Amazon FBA and how new Amazon sellers get started.

Let’s jump right in.

Tell us about your background. How did you get started with Amazon FBA?

As much as a cliche this must sound, I wanted freedom. Freedom to manage my time and control my money. Amazon FBA was the obvious choice compared to others. Find a great product to sell that provides value to customers and let Amazon FBA take care of the rest.

I learnt as much as I could, bit the bullet and went for it. I learnt some heavy lessons along the way but all extremely worthwhile, especially, now that I can plan my time as I please and not the control of management deciding when I take holidays or feel guilty about being sick.

What makes Amazon FBA a good business model?

Once a great product is found, it’s extremely simple to run and only takes 1 hour a week of work if I’m not expanding the business. If I’m looking for more products to sell and expanding, then more hours are required. All I do is find a product that sells well on Amazon, it’s proven and find ways to improve it using the data that already exists on Amazon and other sites. Get a supplier to make it, get it shipped to an Amazon warehouse and let the sales roll in. Obviously, there’s a little more to it than this but that’s the basics right there!

Some e-commerce professionals claim that Amazon FBA is dead – that it’s now nearly impossible to make an income as an Amazon seller. How would you respond to that?

I love that this is happening. It just means there’s more for opportunities for new and existing sellers. Now is the absolute best time to sell on Amazon. Why? There are more people than ever relying on shopping online! Traffic has increased more than ever before online and sales have gone up. The trick here is to add value to the customer. The same was said 2 years ago, 3 years ago, 5 years ago. People saying Amazon is saturated. I started 3 years ago and it is definitely not saturated. My students would say the same.

What would you say is the biggest challenge for those starting an Amazon FBA business?

Patience and persistence. These are two skills that are highly underrated in my opinion. I see most people start but don’t follow through. I see people learn a lot and not take action. When people do take action, they give up at the first hurdle. These are all mental challenges that everyone faces. Pushing through this, it’s easy to see how simple overcoming these hurdles are.

Why do you think you’ve been so successful as an Amazon seller?

Patience and persistence! Oh and calculated risks. I don’t like taking huge risks with money so I’m very calculated when I launch a new product or look to expand it into a brand. I think it’s important to know, it’s ok to have great days and not so great days, as long as, you work towards your goal every day, just a little bit and that’s what I did and still do today!

What inspired you to create the FBA Stars course?

I like to think of myself as a straight to the point person. No BS and no fluff. I’ve always been like this and everything I’ve seen online doesn’t seem to be like this. I also have had so many people asking me to mentor, coach and teach them that I couldn’t get around to everyone. So I thought I’d just create a course with all of my knowledge in a well thought out course. Step-by-step, I take the no BS approach and take students to the end results.

What are some results that students of the FBA Stars course have achieved?

I love this question because it allows me to be honest where I see some others are not. I see my students achieve as small as $5k a month to $70k a month. Here’s the super honest part… 95% of students do not take action. The 5% that do, succeed and are growing their businesses to become time rich!

What makes FBA Stars different from courses about selling on Amazon?

It’s got to be my knowledge, techniques and no BS approach. I have provided everything that I use to this day like my easy-to-follow spreadsheets, pdf guides and check lists so nothing is missed and no costly mistakes are made. I also have a private facebook group for students to ask me any question they want!

Could you share some of the early mistakes you made as an Amazon seller and what they taught you?

Back when I first started my Amazon business, I made the critical mistake of saying ‘I’ll figure it out on my own.’

The result? I lost $15,000 selling the wrong product. A mistake I could have easily if I just had the right information, the right guide. I’ve since grown my Amazon business to 6-figures — but that journey came with the price of lessons learned, along with thousands of dollars invested in coaching.

You don’t have to invest thousands of dollars the way that I did. Nor make the same costly mistakes.

I’ve made mistakes like order way too many products at the wrong time or focused way too much on branding. I feel I’ve made tons of mistakes and that’s another reason I created the course, to make sure this doesn’t happen to others.

What are your predictions for the future of Amazon FBA? Do you see this business model growing in the years to come?

Absolutely, just take a look at Amazon as a whole! There is growth everywhere. Did you know that 50% of online shoppers now go straight to Amazon? Yes, it’s true. When it comes to Oct – Dec, online traffic on Amazon increases by 5x – 10x! It’s not stopping. This is just the start. Once you launch a product, build the brand around it, have people manage your site for you and you will have a profitable and sellable business at the end of it.

What piece of advice would you give to someone starting an Amazon FBA business today?

Just start! Look at the last 5 years of your life. Do you want it to be the same for the next 5 years or do you have a different lifestyle? If you want a better lifestyle that you design, my advice is to start now.
