Siteground Review: Does It Live Up To Its Reputation?

When you’re starting a blog or website, be extra careful what web hosting company you sign up for. Choose the wrong web hosting service and you could be dealing with nonstop headaches, like slow site speed, poor security, and rude customer service. On the other hand, if you choose a great web hosting service your experience will be smooth sailing – supportive customer service, fast side speed, and top-notch security. That’s how I would describe my experience with Siteground over the last 2.5 years. 

Siteground is a popular web hosting service that definitely lives up to its reputation. In this Siteground review, I’ll go over the pros, cons, and all the details to help decide if Siteground would be the right web hosting service for you.

What is Siteground?

Siteground is a web hosting company that powers two million websites. It provides website management for a range of different types of websites, such as small and medium WordPress sites, eCommerce websites, and high-traffic business websites. Siteground offers shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and cloud hosting. For the purposes of this review, I’m focusing on Siteground’s shared hosting plans, which allows multiple websites to use a single server. This is the cheapest and most popular type of hosting for blogs and websites.  

Siteground’s unique selling proposition is a trio of benefits – fast speed, top-notch security, and great customer service. While every web hosting company claims to offer those benefits, Siteground actually delivers on that promise. In fact, Consumer Advocate, a group that performs in-depth research on consumer products, tested 12 top hosting companies and found that Siteground provided the best overall value.  

What is Siteground used for?

Siteground is used for managing websites and hosting websites on the internet. Every website needs a storage space to keep all its files, code, images, and everything it needs to run properly. That’s what a web hosting service provides – a sort of digital storage space for your website. Siteground allocates space on a web server to host all of your website’s files. The types of websites you can manage on Siteground include but are not limited to:

Siteground Review: My Experience with Siteground

I switched my first blog to Siteground after a year of using its competitor, Bluehost. My time with Bluehost was marred by one headache after another – particularly frequent security problems, downtime, and the most incompetent customer service team I’ve ever encountered. Again, be extra careful what web hosting you choose or you could end up spending more time fixing problems than producing content.

Putting behind my dilemma with Bluehost, I signed up for Siteground after it was recommended by a few blogger friends. Before signing up, I did the due diligence to read every Siteground review I could find. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive on blogging Facebook groups, consumer review sites, and web developer forums. I was sold.

I did not regret my decision to switch to Siteground. This web hosting company has far exceeded my expectations! Over the last 2.5 years, the two things that stand out about using Siteground are superb customer service and a lack of technical problems. 

Superb customer service

The first thing that impressed me about Siteground was the customer service. When I was switching from Bluehost to Siteground, I was so impressed with how quickly the Siteground customer service responded to my support requests. I signed onto chat and a customer rep, Whitney, responded within 30 seconds. She gave me an overview of the transfer process and told me I would receive an update when it was complete. (At the time, Siteground provided done-for-you transfers. Now, you can transfer your site to Siteground using a plugin.) Three hours later, I received this message:

What I thought would be a cumbersome process was actually painless. At that point, I knew I had made a great decision by switching to Siteground.

Throughout my time with Siteground, I’ve contacted customer service dozens of times, and the customer service reps have been equally personable and quick. It typically takes 30-45 seconds to get in touch with someone on chat, as opposed to 30-45 minutes with Siteground. I’ve also used Siteground’s phone support a few times. I got through to a person in less than a minute. 

I love that Siteground’s support team actually treats you like a person and takes great care to resolve any issues you have. Questions and issues come up, and you’ll need to reach out for help. Having access to a well-trained, personable customer service team makes everything so much easier. When choosing a web hosting service, make sure to seriously consider the quality of the customer service. 

Close to zero technical problems

When I was using Bluehost, my site was down, slow, or hacked at least a few times a month. The technical problems were nonstop. When I switched to Siteground, those problems practically disappeared overnight. That’s because Siteground takes extra measures to keep your site secure. For instance, it does weekly security scans and provides a free SSL certificate. An SSL certificate prevents others from impersonating your site and enables an encrypted connection.

The main technical issue I’ve encountered with Siteground is with my email, not my websites. Sometimes, I would be logged out of my email because of a connection error. This happened a number of times so I reached out to the customer service team. The customer service representative gave me a new, secure link to access my email and resolved the problem.

I can’t emphasize enough how amazing Siteground’s customer support team is. This makes a big difference in your experience. Reaching out to customer service is a joy! It’s a far departure from the typical experience you have with customer service, like waiting for 30 minutes to get a hold of someone, getting the runaround, or being transferred to another department. With Siteground, I know that someone personable will respond quickly and resolve my issue. Siteground has 24/7 chat support as well as phone support. 

When I started this website, my second website hosted on Siteground, I contacted Siteground support at least 10 times in the days before going live. First, I had to import and redirect a handful of posts from my first blog. Secondly, I had a last-minute burst of inspiration and changed my domain name. Every single time I contacted support, I got a hold of someone within about 30-45 seconds and clarified the issue I had within 5-15 minutes, depending on the complexity. Other Siteground users can attest to the superior customer service. 

After dealing with Bluehost’s rude, unhelpful customer service, I have an even greater appreciation for the excellent support team at Siteground. 

Siteground has outstanding uptime 

Uptime refers to the percentage of time that the server hosting your website is up and running. The closer to 100% this number is, the better. All web hosting companies aim for 100% uptime, but having a perfect uptime is highly unlikely. Technical glitches and server problems are bound to happen. The best that web hosting companies can do is to keep those issues at a minimum.

Why is uptime important? You want your site to be up and running whenever visitors land on it. Otherwise, all the time and effort you put into producing content, curating products, or optimizing for lead generation will be in vain.  If your web hosting service is constantly down, so will your website. This is terrible for business because consumers won’t return to your website if they have a negative experience. This results in lost leads, lost affiliate sales, lost ad revenue, and other missed opportunities. In a nutshell, you won’t be in business for long if your web host’s uptime is low. That’s why you should most definitely pay attention to the uptime of any web hosting service you choose.

The team at Siteground takes uptime seriously. Their servers average a 99.996% uptime, which means it has a downtime of about 30 seconds a month. This puts Siteground among the most reliable web hosts to keep your site running. Siteground guarantees a minimum uptime of 99.9% on an annual basis in its service agreement. If it doesn’t fulfill that requirement, you can get free hosting for the months that fell short of the standard.

How gut-wrenching would it be if a WordPress malfunction happens and you lose months of your hard work? You’d probably want to throw in the towel, right? Siteground protects you from potential disasters like that by automatically backing up your website on a daily basis. You don’t need to worry about if your backup is up-to-date. It always is. Every week, I receive an email from Siteground with an update on my website’s security status. If there’s any malware on your site, they will send you a warning immediately. So far, almost all my weekly security scans have been problem-free. I received a malware warning about a week ago after I installed some corrupted code. Of course, Siteground helped me resolve the issue instantly. Siteground takes security seriously and goes above and beyond to keep your site secure! This, too, will give you so much peace of mind!

Because I experienced that security scare with Bluehost, I appreciate this service even more. At the end of each week, Siteground sends you a status update on the security of your website. The company takes security seriously and goes the extra mile to protect your website.

Siteground’s speed can boost your Google rankings

Did you know that your site’s speed affects your SEO? Google has indicated that site speed is one of the factors they use to determine how to rank your posts. At the end of the day, Google wants to provide users with a great experience. That means relevant content that they can access quickly. If you have a fast site, then Google’s bots can crawl and index your site quickly. That way, your posts will show up in search results sooner. The Cons of Siteground 

The prices are above average

Until recently, Siteground was one of the most affordable web hosting services. I signed up for their StartUp hosting plan back in 2018 for $3.95 a month. In June 2020, the price for the StartUp plan increased to $6.99 per month. Siteground added about $3 to the monthly price of all of its shared hosting plans, which is quite a significant increase. These were the pricing plans before the price hike:

Still, I believe that you get what you pay for. For the speed, reliability, and customer support that Siteground provides, I believe it is worth the price. I would gladly pay a higher price for Siteground than pay for a lower price for the likes of Bluehost, Go Daddy, or Hostgator. The quality of the customer service alone makes Siteground a better option.

You don’t get a free domain name

Most web hosting companies give you a free domain registration when you sign up for a hosting plan. Siteground does not. You need to make a separate payment of $15.95 to register your domain name. If you decide to change your domain name, you’ll need to pay again to register the new name. I learned this when I changed the domain name for this site. It would be nice if Siteground provided more price discounts and bonus sign up incentives like other web hosting companies. 

Final Thoughts  

Siteground is a reliable web hosting service with excellent customer service, fast speeds, top-notch security, and a host of other features that make managing a website easy. If you’re considering web hosting services to run your blog, online store, or website, I would highly recommend Siteground.
